AP Spanish Language & Culture

AP Spanish Language & Composition is a course of intense studies through conversation, listening, comprehension, reading, writing, and grammar analysis. These skills are expanded through the study of literature, culture, history, and geography of the Spanish-speaking world. The use of Spanish for active communication is stressed in the following ways: comprehending formal and informal spoken Spanish, composing expository passages, and expressing ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.

AP Spanish Literature & Culture

This course is intended for students who have taken the AP Spanish Language & Culture course or wish to further develop their reading and writing skills through the study of seven centuries of Hispanic literature. This course focuses on poetry analysis, thematic analysis, and text analysis of medieval and Golden Age literature, nineteenth-century literature, and twentieth-century literature of the Spanish-speaking world. Students are exposed to a wide variety of genres and types of discourse and acquainted with significant works that have become sources for literature and art worldwide.

Chinese I

This course is designed to introduce students to Chinese language and culture. Chinese I courses emphasize basic syntax, simple vocabulary, written characters, and spoken tones so students can read, write, speak, and understand the language at a basic level within predictable areas of need, using customary courtesies and conventions. Chinese culture is introduced through the art, literature, customs, and history of Chinese-speaking people.

Chinese II

Chinese II courses build upon skills developed in Chinese I, extending a student's ability to understand and express themselves in Chinese and increasing their vocabulary. Typically, students learn how to engage in discourse for informative or social purposes, write expressions or passages that show understanding of sentence construction and phrasing, and comprehend the language when spoken slowly. Students usually explore the customs, history, and art forms of Chinese-speaking people to deepen their understanding of the culture(s).

Spanish I

This is a beginning Spanish course with a four-point emphasis: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Basic grammar, basic vocabulary, and comprehension are the skills emphasized. Included is an introduction to the Hispanic culture and the geography of the Hispanic world. Students whose primary language is Spanish should not take this class.

Spanish II

Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I. Vocabulary, grammar, and oral & audio comprehension is expanded. Much time is spent on practical usage in the form of conversation.
