In the AVID elective, we seek potential and turn it into something productive by improving students’ critical thinking, better their reading and writing, teaching time management, and overall improve organizational, inquiry, collaboration and leadership skills.
So, who are potential AVID students?
AVID students usually carry a GPA of 2.0-3.5. They are mostly in the middle to upper-middle of their peers academically. AVID students have the potential for Honors and/or AP (Advance Placement) classes but need to develop the skills needed to be successful in such rigorous courses.
AVID students are exposed to rigorous classes and have the support of teachers, AVID tutors, and other AVID students, their families, and the student’s own individual determination.
AVID students are dedicated to coming to school and being there on time because of their strong motivation to succeed and attend college.
AVID students may be first-generation college students.
AVID students are diverse in their ethnicity, experiences, and post high school graduation goals.
AVID students demonstrate good citizenship skills and good behavior skills inside and outside the classroom.
In addition, the AVID program should reflect the demographics of the school it is serving. Students participating in special education, EL programming, and other intervention and support services are also eligible to enroll in the AVID elective class.
