AVID Elective Class

AVID Elective Class

College & Career Readiness

In addition to supporting and developing academic skills, AVID elective students are prepared for college and career readiness through college tours, guest speakers, and field trips. AVID elective students also receive support through the college application process; including help researching and applying for scholarships.

AVID Team Building

Throughout students’ academic and professional careers, they will work with a variety of personalities. Team building activities help to achieve better cooperative relationships that then have a positive impact on students’ long-term college and career goals. Through the use of team building activities, and a supportive classroom culture, the AVID elective class becomes more than a class; it becomes a second family.

WICOR

WICOR is an acronym for strategies used in AVID classrooms. The letters stand for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. By practicing these critical areas each day, students become better prepared for college and future careers.

Tutorials

AVID tutorials create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content classes and develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners. It’s not just homework help.

Small group tutorial sessions take place 1-2 times each week during the AVID elective class. During tutorials, the AVID elective class is divided into several tutorial groups based on subject area. Under the supervision of the AVID elective teacher and an AVID-trained tutor, students participate in study groups to work through points of confusion from their core content classes.

The goal of AVID tutorials is for students and tutors to push each other’s thinking by using the inquiry process. Tutors and other students do not give the answers. Instead, they facilitate the groups’ learning process by asking guiding questions.
