(CGUHS) Natay Carr was recognized on Tuesday, September 5, as the August Rotary Student of the Month at the district’s Governing Board meeting. Natay, like many in her class, spent her freshman year at home. While this did not afford her the opportunity to get involved, it did teach her important skills that have made her successful. She learned that discipline, hard work, and perseverance are the keys to being successful. During her sophomore year, she was in person once again and challenged herself with AP and honors courses. One of her teachers from that year, Mr. Chris Mallek, said, “I had the honor of teaching Natay in her first AP course her sophomore year. She continually worked hard at mastering the skills and content of this college-level history course. Natay is a dedicated student and a wonderful person. She is one of the nicest people you will meet. Natay always has a bright smile and a kind word for you; a true model of a great Casa Grande Union High School community member.” Natay also joined Key Club and DECA Marketing that year and continues to be a member of each. As a senior, she is the SBE President for Marketing, which means she oversees the DECA Marketing store. In her junior year, she continued her AP classes and joined Link Crew and National Honor Society. Natay is a Link Crew Commissioner now, and when asked why she was chosen to be a leader of leaders, Ms. Kristin McCallin, one of the Link Crew coordinators, said, “Natay joined Link Crew as a junior and showed her leadership skills when the 8th graders came to tour our campus. When it came time for Mrs. Machelor and me to select commissioners for Link Crew, we knew Natay had to be one because she is a strong, confident leader who works well with her peers and the freshmen she mentors.” Natay plans to attend Arizona State University (ASU) in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Justice Studies. After ASU, she plans to attend law school at Dartmouth or Harvard. Once a practicing lawyer, she plans to open her own firm. Natay is supported by her parents, Denise and Leon Carr, as well as her older sister, Kiara. She says without their support, she wouldn’t be half the amazing person she is today.
