Media Literacy in Digital Age

(VGHS) On Thursday, February 6, Mr. John Bill Caballero's Media Literacy in Digital Age students completed a Newspaper Analysis activity. With the utilization of localized printed newspapers, specifically Casa Grande Dispatch and Arizona Republic, students select two (2) news articles that they were interested in and analyzed it in terms of its central message, possible language, industry, audience, or representation bias. This activity enabled students to get a feel of reading newspapers, most especially with the emergence of social media via phone. This activity used critical thinking and intelligent judgment to read material. Additionally, students were allowed to utilize their phone in taking photos of the news stories they were interested in for the mastery assignment purposes. The key takeaways of this activity were the following: a.) Students were able to critically analyze news, both online and printed, before giving judgments and reactions. b.) Students utilized phones, not for leisure, rather, for increased participation in the classroom assignment.
