Thirteen VGHS students competed in the 12th Annual Casa Grande Plein Air Painting Competition, hosted by the Casa Grande Arts and Culture Commission.  "En plein air" is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Students painted landscapes at CG Mountain Park.

Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color, and movement into their works. Both artist and subject must be outdoors, and photographs are NOT used. Contemporary plein air artists capture moments in time that reflect the ever-changing colors, light and shadows, temperature, and shifting elements. This art form requires stamina, focus, and the ability to be completely absorbed in the work.

The Spartans are instructed by Michelle Bottomley, Fine Arts Teacher. Visit the Art Department at https://www.cguhsd.org/vgArt.aspx..
