Hello, my name is Athena Garcia, the Social Worker at Casa Grande Union High School. I am an Arizona native who grew up in Phoenix, AZ, moving to the east valley after graduating high school. I am a first generation college graduate in which I obtained my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Social Work at Arizona State University. Go Devils! I served in the AmeriCorps survivor link program during my Bachelors degree; a program that educates, trains, and certifies ASU students to become domestic violence advocates in the community. I interned as a case manager at a Catholic Charities domestic violence shelter, providing crisis support and advocacy to survivors and their families of domestic violence.
During my Master degree program, I continued serving in the AmeriCorps program, providing training, advocacy, and promoting domestic violence prevention. I educated the community and brought awareness regarding teen dating violence and available community resources. I also interned as the school therapist at Hope College and Career Readiness High School in South Phoenix. In this role, I provided therapy, crisis intervention, and support to school staff, students, and their families.
My husband of 20 years and I have four teenage daughters and two yorkie poos whom we love very much. Before Social Work, I stayed home to raise our four daughters and worked part-time as a realtor. From 2000 to 2010, I served the community through my local church, teaching and mentoring children and young adults. I have a deep sense of purpose and passion to teach, guide, and encourage the youth of today to produce a kinder more empathic society for tomorrow. I believe that they are our future and should receive all the support and needed resources to succeed. I practice the client centered approach by Carl Rogers and motivational interviewing techniques to support others in discovering their full potential. As your school Social Worker, I will serve, advocate, and build relationships with Casa Grande staff, students, and their families to build an enriched community. I look forward to meeting you all!
