Students were enthralled by the lecture given by Marine veteran and volunteer of the Devil Pups organization Tony Garcia as he informed them of all the experiences they were sure to have if they attend a two-week leadership camp at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, this summer. The cost of the camp is well over $1,000 per cadet, but this cost is absorbed by boosters and organizational sponsors providing opportunity to socioeconomic disadvantaged students. In short, the two-week long summer camp is completely free to interested Vista Grande High School Marine Corps JROTC Cadets. In true Marine fashion, Mr. Garcia pledged to obtain the necessary funding to support attendance for as many VGHS cadets who were interested in attending. Cadets (Photo: L-R) Ullivieri Zuniga Cruz, Emiliano Acevedo, Eithan Ledbetter, Isiah Taylor, Juan Lizarraga, and Dominic Vandever listen intently as they imagine themselves participating in the many challenging, yet rewarding, adventures sure to be encountered when participating in this exciting summer camp. Cadets were told to expect excursions to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Command Museum, the USS Midway Museum, a Marine Corps boot camp graduation ceremony, and attend a graduation ceremony commemorating their time at the camp. One cadet who attended the camp previously reassured the cadets of the profound sense of accomplishment and achievement they would experience upon completion of the camp. The Spartans are instructed by Dr. Tyrone Hall, CWO-3 (ret), and MSgt Jorge Rico. Visit their webpage at www.cguhsd.org/vgJROTC.aspx.
