Students from the CGUHS Chapter of SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) participated in the 3-day long 2019 SEDS-USA Space Vision Conference, hosted this year by ASU. At this event, attended by more than 65 colleges and universities from around the world, CGUHS was the only high school chapter in attendance, being only one of a very few high schools granted a charter. Pre-Conference activities included attending a 3D Astronomy show titled “The Edge of Exploration” at the ASU Marston Exploration Theater and a tour of  ASU’s Gallery of Scientific Exploration which houses the largest collection or meteorites in the world along with labs preparing instrumentation to be included on future deep space and planetary exploration missions. Led by STEM Engineering senior John Travis Daniel, the students attended conference sessions on Astrophotography, Space Exploration: Stars and their Planets, a panel discussion on National Space Policy, a session titled “Exploring Red Planets and Metal Worlds: How JPL Turns Dreams into Reality”, a talk by Astronaut Ed Gibson (Skylab III) on “America In Space”, a session titled “Space for Earth, The Future of Human and Robotic Space Exploration” which was sponsored by Lockheed Martin, and sessions titled  “Blueprint to Reality” and “Off the Record” which were panel discussions on the reality of working in the space industry. The students attended a hands-on workshop where they learned to use STK, software used worldwide by public and private sector organizations to model complex land, sea, air, or space systems and evaluate their performance in real or simulated time. They also received a licensed copy of this software. Our students also had the opportunity to meet and speak one-on-one with Janet Karika, Chief of Staff at NASA and with Jeff DeWit, Chief Financial Officer at NASA, and learned about the inside dealings regarding space policy and politics on Capitol Hill. STEM Engineering senior Chloé Buchanan had the opportunity for in-depth discussions on space policy with space industry leaders such as Lockheed-Martin, Virgin Orbit, and United Launch Alliance. The students were accompanied by the SEDS-CGUHS faculty advisor, engineering and mathematics teacher John Morris.
